POSSESSIVE PRONOUNS
In Ukrainian, possessive pronouns have the same form (number, gender and case) as the word they modify, except for the forms of 3rd person singular which never change.
Я Ти Він Вона Воно Ми Ви Вони Whose? One’s own |
МІЙ |
МОЯ |
МОЄ |
МОЇ |
POSSESSIVE PRONOUN СВІЙ
In Ukrainian, along with the possessive pronouns related to the corresponding personal pronouns, there is an alternative form "свій" meaning (some)one's own.
The possessive pronoun "свій" changes according to the gender and number of the noun it describes following the pattern of МІЙ.
This possessive pronoun always refers to the subject of the sentence.
Я читаю свій журнал. I am reading my (belonging to me) magazine.
Він читає свій журнал. He is reading his (belonging to him) magazine.
Note, that we use the pronouns МІЙ, ТВІЙ, ЙОГО, etc. when it is necessary to show that the object belongs to another person, but not the subject.
Compare:
Я читаю його журнал. I am reading his (belonging to him) magazine.
Він читає його журнал. He is reading his (belonging to someone else) magazine.
