Portuguese: Word View, click below to listen

The basic rule to make the plural of a noun in Portuguese is to add an "S."
Ex.: A cidade -> As cidades O centavo -> Os centavos
The main exceptions to this rule are the following:

1) Nouns ending in -M change the -M to -NS in the plural.
Ex.: O homem -> Os homens A viagem -> As viagens

2) Nouns ending in -R, -Z, or -S add -ES to form the plural.
Ex.: A mulher -> As mulheres O rapaz -> Os rapazes
O país -> Os países
Exception: O lápis -> Os lápis

3) Nouns ending in "L" change the "L" to "-IS" in the plural.
Ex.: O jornal -> Os jornais O papel -> Os papéis

4) Nouns ending in -ÃO may form their plural changing -ÃO to either -ÃOS, -ÕES, or -ÃES.
However, most times -ão changes to -ões to form the plural.
Ex.: O alemão -> Os alemães O pão -> Os pães
O coração -> Os corações A lição -> As lições
O irmão -> Os irmãos O furacão -> Os furacões
